Bassett given Ag Ambassador Award by Farm Bureau
Barbie Bassett of Madison, MS, has been named the winner of Farm Bureau’s
Ag Ambassador Award for 2011 at the organization’s annual meeting
on December 4.
Bassett, Chief Meteorologist for WLBT- TV3, grew up on a farm in the
Mississippi Delta. She has carried her farm upbringing and her love for
agriculture to her adult life.
“I don’t think the average person really grasps the enormity
and the sacrifice that you make in being a farmer and that you are literally
putting your whole life into something and hoping that it is going to
provide a yield, a return of investment,” said Bassett. “It
is hard for the typical small farmer to make a living these days.”
One act in particular though caught Farm Bureau’s attention. It
was a TV spot she recorded about Farm Bureau’s Ag Image Campaign.
The spot highlighted farmers, the benefits of agriculture, and how it
affects the daily lives of the average consumer. She also brought out
the fact that her parents are still on the farm.
The Ag Ambassador Award was created to recognize individuals who have
gone beyond their normal range of activities in promoting Mississippi
agriculture. It’s not presented every year – only when Farm
Bureau feels that it has been earned.
